Niels O. Møller dining table

This rare and finely crafted extendable dining table was designed by Danish furniture designer Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The table is constructed from richly grained rosewood, showcasing a deep, reddish-brown tone with natural dark veining, typical of high-quality Brazilian rosewood used during this period. The tabletop has a soft round shape in its compact state and can be extended into an oval form through an integrated butterfly-leaf mechanism, offering flexibility in seating capacity while maintaining a seamless aesthetic.

The table rests on four slightly tapering, round-sectioned legs which contribute to its light and refined profile. The form is characterized by clean lines and minimal ornamentation, reflecting the principles of Danish mid-century modernism where functional clarity and natural materials play a central role.

The surface and structure are in good vintage condition and have been fully restored, with the woodwork carefully refinished to highlight the rosewood’s original warmth and intricate grain patterns. The extension mechanism operates smoothly and the leaves match the tone of the main tabletop, indicating a thoughtful restoration effort.

Niels O. Møller (1920–1982) was known for his precise craftsmanship and dedication to form, often designing pieces that required meticulous joinery and the highest standard of materials. His furniture is recognized for its organic lines, subtle elegance, and ergonomic sensitivity. Møller founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1944, which quickly became associated with quality Scandinavian furniture production. The firm exclusively produced Møller’s designs and became especially well-regarded for its chairs and tables, which continue to be highly sought after by collectors and design institutions.

The table is a representative work of Scandinavian modernism, blending timeless aesthetics with practical utility, suitable for both dining and representational contexts.
