Niels O. Møller dining chairs
This rare and cohesive dining set, composed of eight dining chairs model 78 and two armchairs model 62, was designed by Niels O. Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark. The ensemble is a celebrated example of mid-century Danish craftsmanship, reflecting Møller’s dedication to organic form, precise joinery, and material integrity.
All ten chairs are constructed from solid rosewood, a material known for its dense structure and dramatic visual character. The rosewood exhibits a deep, warm tone with expressive grain patterns, providing a rich visual texture. The wood has been carefully maintained, and its finish remains polished and intact, with only minimal signs of age consistent with high-quality vintage preservation.
The seats have been newly reupholstered in natural vegetable-tanned leather in a soft, creamy beige. This choice of leather introduces a refined material contrast and will continue to develop a distinctive patina over time, as the surface gradually darkens and acquires unique tonal shifts due to natural oils, light exposure, and handling. This natural aging process is especially valued in Danish design for the individuality it lends to each piece.
The model 78 dining chairs are defined by their elegant ladder-back design, composed of four gently curved horizontal slats. These slats offer ergonomic support while preserving visual openness. The slender back legs rise slightly beyond the seat line, accentuating the vertical rhythm and continuity of the design.
The two armchairs, model 62, feature the same ladder-back construction, but with the addition of sculpted, integrated armrests that curve outward from the backrest and flow seamlessly into the front legs. These additions offer enhanced comfort and a more formal presence, making them ideal as host chairs at each end of a dining table.
All chairs feature finely tapered legs and smoothly rounded edges, underscoring the emphasis on soft, tactile geometry. The joinery is precise and unobtrusive, typical of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik’s workshop standards, which were renowned for their traditional cabinetmaking techniques and material excellence.
The condition of the set is excellent. The rosewood frames are solid, stable, and finely finished, while the leather upholstery is pristine, newly applied, and ready to develop character over time.
