Information

This rare table lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden, is a refined embodiment of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Combining elegant proportions with a considered use of materials, the lamp reflects Bergström’s deep understanding of both functional lighting and sculptural form.

The lamp features a brass shade with subtle perforated detailing around its perimeter. These perforations not only serve as a visual accent but also allow for a soft diffusion of light, enhancing the lamp’s atmospheric quality. The shade, slightly domed and gently flared, is balanced in scale and proportion to the body, and has developed a warm patina over time. This natural aging process lends depth and character to the brass surface while maintaining its soft luster.

Supporting the shade is a finely fluted stem crafted from solid mahogany. The vertical grooves in the wood add tactile richness and emphasize the natural grain, while the warm tone of the mahogany complements the golden hues of the brass components. The stem transitions seamlessly into a circular brass base, which anchors the design and provides visual continuity through its matching patina.

Together, these elements—brass, mahogany, and diffused light—form a cohesive and tactile composition. The fluting of the wood and the perforations in the metal reflect Bergström’s attention to detail and his ability to integrate subtle ornamentation within a modernist framework.

The lamp is in very good vintage condition. The brass surfaces exhibit a consistent patina with only minor wear, and the mahogany stem is intact with a warm, even finish. The lamp functions well, offering a warm, ambient light that would suit both modern and traditional interiors.
