Biography
Folke Ohlsson was born in Malmö, Sweden, in 1919. He studied at the School of the Gothenburg Society of Industrial Design before beginning his career with the Swedish furniture and bedding manufacturer Dux. His early background in Swedish furniture production gave him a strong understanding of materials, construction, and the practical demands of manufacturing.
In the early 1950s, Ohlsson moved to the United States, where he established Dux Incorporated as the American branch of the Swedish company. He arrived with miniature scale models of his furniture and components for a chair that could be assembled and disassembled, demonstrating his interest in efficient construction and transport. This “knock-down” approach helped reduce shipping and storage costs and became an important part of Dux’s success in the American market.
Under Ohlsson’s direction, Dux furniture became widely distributed in the United States during the 1950s. His designs helped popularize Scandinavian modern furniture in American homes, combining the clean proportions and material quality associated with Swedish design with a production model suited to a broader market. At its peak, the Dux line was sold across the United States and became closely associated with modern, comfortable seating.
Ohlsson’s furniture often used woods such as beech, walnut, and teak, together with upholstered cushions and carefully considered proportions. Designs such as the Scissor Chair, along with his armchairs and sofas for Dux, reflect a balance between traditional furniture detailing and modern simplicity. His work was recognized internationally, including with a Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale and a Good Design Award from the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
