Just Andersen (1884–1943) was a Danish designer, sculptor and craftsman known for his distinctive metalwork and decorative objects. Born in Godhavn, Greenland, he became an important figure in Danish decorative arts during the first half of the 20th century, working across sculpture, metalwork, jewellery and ceramics.

Biography

Andersen initially trained as a decorative sculptor before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later at the School of Danish Crafts. Early in his career, he worked with leading Danish silversmiths and manufacturers, including Georg Jensen, A. Michelsen and P. Hertz, experiences that helped establish his knowledge of traditional metalworking and production.

In 1918, Andersen established his own workshop. He worked extensively in pewter, silver, brass, copper and bronze, producing candlesticks, bowls, vases, sculptures and other objects for the home. His designs are typically characterised by simplified forms, carefully modelled surfaces and an interest in the inherent qualities of the materials.

Andersen also developed his own alloy known as Disko metal, named after Disko Bay in Greenland. The material could be cast and subsequently patinated to resemble bronze or other metals, allowing him to produce sculptural objects in a more economical material. Disko metal became particularly associated with his workshop and remains a recognisable feature of his production.

His work combined influences from Neoclassicism and Art Deco with the restrained forms that increasingly characterised Scandinavian design during the interwar period. Andersen achieved considerable international success, with his company establishing showrooms in cities including Berlin, London, New York and Los Angeles. He also maintained connections with the Danish silver industry and designed the Blok flatware pattern for Georg Jensen in the 1930s.

Alongside his metalwork, Andersen produced ceramics and ceramic sculpture throughout his career. He continued working until his death in 1943, leaving behind a diverse body of decorative and functional objects that remain closely associated with Danish design of the 1920s and 1930s.
