Märta Blomstedt (1899–1982) was a Finnish architect and designer associated with the development of Finnish functionalism during the 20th century. Her work reflects a holistic approach to design, where architecture, interiors, furnishings, and spatial planning were considered as part of a unified whole. Through projects such as Hotel Aulanko in Hämeenlinna, she demonstrated a refined ability to combine functionalist principles with carefully composed interiors, creating environments that were practical, elegant, and thoughtfully detailed. Blomstedt’s work occupies an important place in Scandinavian modernism, particularly for its balance of clarity, comfort, and complete design thinking.

Biography

Märta Blomstedt was born Märta Elisabeth Adelaide von Willebrand in Turku in 1899. She studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology and graduated as an architect in 1922. During her studies and early career, she became interested in modern functionalism, a movement that in Finland emphasized rational planning, separation of structure and façade, and buildings shaped by air, light, and practical use.

In 1924, she married the architect Pauli E. Blomstedt, and in 1926 the couple began working together as independent architects. Their early work was noted for its functional approach and restrained appearance, moving away from decorative expression toward a more modern understanding of space, structure, and everyday life. Märta Blomstedt also completed further studies in Italy and France between 1924 and 1929, broadening her architectural and design perspective.

After Pauli E. Blomstedt’s death in 1935, she continued several of their unfinished projects together with Matti Lampén. In 1938, the two established the firm Blomstedt & Lampén, which became known for both new buildings and renovation projects. Among their most important works was Hotel Aulanko in Hämeenlinna, where Blomstedt’s ability to design across architecture, interiors, and furnishings was clearly demonstrated.

During and after the Second World War, Blomstedt & Lampén worked on restoration, renovation, residential, commercial, and public projects. They were also responsible for city planning work, including plans for Kuusjärvi and the Oravikoski mining community, as well as public and private buildings connected to these developments. Their work combined functionalist principles with careful attention to the needs of modern communities.
