Märta Blomstedt easy chairs
This very rare pair of easy chairs, model Aulanko, was designed by Märta Blomstedt in 1939 specifically for the lounge area of the renowned Hotel Aulanko in Hämeenlinna, Finland. The chairs were produced by Häämenlinna and remain exemplary pieces of Finnish modernist design from the late 1930s.
The chairs exhibit a sculptural form with an enveloping, softly curved backrest and armrests that seamlessly integrate with the seat structure. They rest on distinct spherical legs crafted from stained birch, which contribute both to the visual character and structural stability of the design. The present example has been newly reupholstered in high-quality natural sheepskin, enhancing the chairs’ tactile and inviting character while respecting the original aesthetic intention.
The original design reflects Blomstedt’s pursuit of functional elegance and comfort, key attributes of the architectural and design language of Hotel Aulanko. The chairs’ broad, deep seats and supportive backs provide exceptional comfort, while their organic form resonates with the ideals of modernist interiors designed to promote relaxation and well-being.
Both chairs remain in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of use consistent with age and careful restoration. The sheepskin upholstery is fresh and immaculate, while the original birch legs exhibit a well-preserved patina.
