Information

A very rare and historically important easy chair, model Aulanko, designed by Märta Blomstedt and produced by Häämenlinna in Finland in 1939. Originally created for the lounge area of the renowned Hotel Aulanko, this design is one of the earliest and most iconic examples of Finnish functionalist furniture, embodying Blomstedt’s visionary approach to form, comfort, and modernity.

The chair’s organic silhouette, with its softly curved backrest and generous armrests, expresses a sculptural harmony that was radical for its time. Its voluminous yet balanced proportions reflect Blomstedt’s architectural sensibility—she was one of Finland’s leading architects of the 1930s—and her commitment to human-centered design. The newly reupholstered sheepskin adds a luxurious tactility, enhancing the piece’s inviting presence while remaining true to its original character.

Supported by spherical birch legs, the Aulanko chair appears to rest lightly on the floor, combining visual playfulness with structural integrity. The combination of natural materials and refined craftsmanship demonstrates the best of Scandinavian modernism—honest, warm, and timelessly elegant.

This example remains in excellent vintage condition with only small signs of use, and represents an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire an authentic piece of Finnish design history, seldom seen outside institutional collections.

Dimensions are 113 cm wide, 100 cm deep, and 93 cm high, with a seat height of 36 cm (44.5 x 39.4 x 36.6 in; SH 14.2 in)
