Information

This rare modular seating group, model 175, also known as Moduline, was designed by the Danish duo Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen and Torben Lind and produced by France & Son in Denmark in 1962. The set comprises four individual easy chairs that can be arranged in various configurations, reflecting a flexible approach to seating that was innovative for its time. The frame is constructed from solid teak, featuring precise joinery that underscores the quality craftsmanship synonymous with Scandinavian modern furniture.

The seating surfaces are upholstered in the original black leather, which is button-tufted and generously padded to provide comfort while maintaining a clean, geometric form. The contrast between the warm tones of the teak frame and the deep black leather upholstery typifies the restrained elegance and material honesty found in mid-century Scandinavian design. The leather exhibits age-appropriate patina, indicative of authentic vintage use, whereas the teak frames remain in excellent condition with only minor traces of wear.

Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen and Torben Lind were known for their modular furniture concepts, emphasizing adaptability, functionality, and clarity of form. Their work aligns with the functionalist principles that defined Danish design during the mid-20th century, focusing on durable materials and timeless aesthetics. France & Son, the manufacturer, was a leading Danish furniture producer renowned for high-quality production and collaboration with influential designers.

This seating group embodies Scandinavian modernism through its balanced combination of structural simplicity and ergonomic comfort. Each individual module measures approximately 58 cm in width, 72 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, with a seat height of 39 cm (22.8 x 28.3 x 28 inches, and seat height 15.4 inches), offering versatility and cohesion in various interior settings.
