Carl-Axel Acking attrib. armchairs
This rare pair of armchairs, attributed to Carl-Axel Acking and produced in Sweden, reflects the refined balance of craftsmanship, materiality, and functional elegance that characterizes Scandinavian modernism. With clean architectural lines and restrained detailing, these chairs are sophisticated examples of postwar Swedish furniture design, rooted in both tradition and modernist ideals.
Each chair is constructed from solid teak, a material favored for its durability and richly figured grain. The teak has been carefully shaped into a precise, rectilinear frame, with softened edges and subtle curvature in areas that engage the user—particularly in the gently sloping armrests and the lightly reclined backrest. The tone of the wood is a warm, medium brown, with a natural oil finish that brings out the depth and warmth of the grain.
The seat and backrest are upholstered in the original black leather, which contrasts strikingly with the teak frame. The leather is smooth, slightly patinated, and remains taut over the cushioning. The backrest is upright but proportionally low, providing support without visual bulk. The seat cushion is well-padded and integrated into the frame for a seamless aesthetic.
A distinctive feature of the chairs is the upholstered armrests—subtly curved and finished in the same black leather as the seat and backrest. These provide both comfort and a cohesive material transition between structural and tactile elements.
The legs are tapered and terminate in discreet brass caps, a refined and practical detail that underscores the attention to materials and finishes. The brass elements introduce a soft metallic accent while protecting the wooden legs, subtly elevating the visual language of the chairs without detracting from their simplicity.
Condition-wise, the chairs are in very good vintage condition. The leather shows minimal wear and has developed a soft sheen from use, while the teak frames are clean and structurally sound, with only minor marks consistent with age. The brass caps retain their original finish with light patina, contributing to the authenticity of the piece.
While documentation of Carl-Axel Acking’s authorship may be limited, the construction techniques, material choices, and proportions align with his known design language—characterized by architectural clarity, thoughtful ergonomics, and Scandinavian restraint.
