Hans Wegner rocking chair
This is the GE-273 keyhole rocking chair designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark during the 1950s. The chair is constructed from solid beechwood and features a suspended seat and backrest in natural canvas, with a loose cylindrical headrest cushion.
The frame displays a light, honey-toned beech color with a fine, even grain, and retains its original matte finish. The design is defined by architectural precision and mechanical detailing, with armrests shaped to a planar profile and intersecting keyhole-shaped joints at the front leg and armrest connection, which function both structurally and visually as a central motif. The rails are steam-bent into curved rockers, which provide a smooth, stable motion while maintaining proportional integrity.
The backrest and seat are suspended by tensioned canvas supports, fastened within the frame, creating a hammock-like seating experience. The back cushion is attached with leather or textile straps and filled with a resilient material to support the cervical area. The canvas shows gentle signs of wear and soft patina, typical for untreated natural fibers, while the head cushion has a minor area of damage visible upon inspection.
Hans J. Wegner was one of Denmark’s most influential furniture designers, widely regarded for his ability to balance form and function with sculptural clarity. His work is emblematic of Danish modernism and is distinguished by a deep understanding of joinery, ergonomic comfort, and traditional craftsmanship. Wegner collaborated extensively with Getama, a Danish manufacturer known for precision woodworking and upholstery production since its founding in 1899 in Gedsted.
The GE-273 rocking chair reflects Wegner’s interest in modern reinterpretations of traditional furniture types. By integrating structural visibility, lightness of materials, and ergonomic logic, he created a modern icon that bridges utility and aesthetic innovation.
The chair is in good vintage condition, showing normal signs of age and use. The wood frame has a consistent patina, and all mechanical joints remain tight and functional. The original canvas is intact, with expected toning, and the head cushion displays a small area of damage.
