Egon Bro Petersen desk
This very rare wall-mounted desk or vanity was designed by Egon Bro Petersen and produced by K. Thomsen in Denmark in 1945. Crafted from solid and veneered teak, the piece exemplifies an early Scandinavian modernist approach that balances functional practicality with sculptural expression. It reflects the transitional era between pre-war craftsmanship and post-war modernism.
The design features a geometric structure with sharply angled side panels softened by rounded front corners, lending the form both precision and elegance. The upper section includes a shallow tabletop bordered by a raised lip at the rear and sides, serving as a practical surface for writing or display. Below this is a tambour-style roll-top compartment composed of vertically slatted teak segments that retract smoothly to reveal internal storage divided for organization. Beneath the tambour compartment are two small drawers with finely carved wooden handles, suitable for personal items, stationery, or grooming accessories.
The teak displays a rich medium-brown tone with visible linear grain and retains a deep, even patina developed over time. The construction is marked by meticulous craftsmanship, evident in carefully mitered joints, precise tambour door mechanics, and consistently rounded edges and profiles. The wall-mounted format adds a sense of lightness and versatility, making it ideal for compact interiors such as entryways or bedrooms.
Egon Bro Petersen was a Danish designer known for elegantly restrained furniture characterized by geometric clarity and refined materials. His limited output often balanced innovation with artisanal quality, typically produced in small batches by specialized Danish workshops like K. Thomsen.
This example is in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with careful use. The tambour mechanism operates smoothly, the drawers are structurally sound, and the wood surface bears slight darkening and fine marks that contribute to its authentic aged character.
The desk measures 95.5 cm wide, 36 cm deep, and 29.5 cm high, approximately 37.6 inches wide, 14.2 inches deep, and 11.6 inches high.
