Information

This rare desk, model JH-571 often referred to as the Architect’s Desk, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by the master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark. The desk is crafted in teak with oak structural elements and chromed steel stretchers, combining refined cabinetmaking with a more architectural, engineered expression. Wegner’s approach in this design emphasizes clarity of construction, tactile materiality, and an elegant interplay between wood and metal.

The table top is made of teak with a thickness of 3 cm, showing a fine and even grain pattern characteristic of the carefully selected timber used by Johannes Hansen’s workshop. The edges are subtly rounded, maintaining a soft tactile quality. Beneath the top are two drawers, one on each side, constructed in teak with recessed circular pulls fitted with chromed steel handles. Both locks are fully functional, and two original keys are included. The spacing between the drawers measures 69.5 cm, allowing comfortable legroom while maintaining the balanced proportions of the desk.

The base consists of four tapered solid oak legs, angled outward in a dynamic stance typical of Wegner’s sculptural woodwork. The legs are connected by chromed steel stretchers in a crossed configuration, which provides structural stability while contributing to the technical character of the piece. The chromed connections emphasize the junctions between materials and reflect Wegner’s interest in visible construction.

Designed in the mid-century period, the desk reflects Wegner’s ability to merge traditional Danish craftsmanship with modern functionalist principles. The combination of teak, oak, and chromed steel is representative of his exploration of mixed materials during the 1950s and 60s, and the collaboration with Johannes Hansen ensured the highest level of execution. The JH-571 is considered one of Wegner’s more architecturally influenced desk designs, with a light yet structurally expressive appearance.

The condition is good vintage with small signs of usage and patina, including minor wear on the wood surface and light aging to the steel elements. These traces are consistent with age and use while preserving the integrity and precision of the construction.

The dimensions are 195 cm in width, 90 cm in depth, and 73 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 76.8 inches by 35.4 inches by 28.7 inches. The table top thickness of 3 cm equals approximately 1.2 inches.
