Frits Henningsen easy chair
This is a very rare easy chair designed and produced by Frits Henningsen in Denmark in 1936. The chair is executed in solid mahogany with original patinated natural leather upholstery and reflects the refined craftsmanship and stylistic clarity that define Henningsen’s work. The design was first presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at Industriforeningen in 1936, an annual showcase that highlighted the highest standards of Danish furniture-making.
The chair features a gently curved backrest that extends into the rear legs in a continuous sweep, emphasizing an organic transition between structural support and visual grace. The arms are fully upholstered and integrated with the frame, terminating in a distinct carved scroll detail that softens the junction between wood and leather. The seat is broad and slightly recessed, framed with a squared apron resting on straight front legs and sabre-style rear legs. The combination of curvature and upright structure contributes to a dignified yet relaxed profile.
The frame is made of finely grained mahogany, displaying a deep, warm tone and a smooth finish with natural aging visible along the grain. The leather is a natural, vegetable-tanned variety, aged to a rich amber-brown with visible wear, creases, and a repair area, all of which contribute to its authenticity and character. The upholstery shows signs of use, with softened structure and discoloration from handling over time, but remains structurally intact and serviceable.
Frits Henningsen (1889–1965) was one of the most important Danish cabinetmakers of the early 20th century, known for producing all his furniture in his own workshop and for personally overseeing each stage of the process. His approach prioritized craftsmanship over mass production, and he often worked outside the mainstream functionalist movement of the 1930s, favoring elegance, natural materials, and classical references. This chair is a strong example of his dedication to both utility and sculptural form.
