Information

This wall-mounted shelf was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Ry Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. Constructed in solid oak, the shelf displays a warm, medium-brown tone that reflects Wegner’s preference for natural materials. The design exemplifies his approach to functional minimalism, combined with a sculptural sensibility. The construction is clean and geometric, consisting of a horizontal base shelf, three upright supports, and a rear structural rail that also serves as the mounting point.

The side panels of the shelf are distinctively shaped with gently rounded corners and an angular profile, providing both visual rhythm and structural stability. The underside of the shelf is subtly chamfered, adding a refined detail that complements the overall simplicity of the design. The joints are secured using traditional woodworking techniques, with exposed wedged tenons visible on the side panels, a hallmark of Wegner’s craftsmanship. The piece remains unadorned, allowing the richness of the oak grain and the clarity of the design to define its aesthetic.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007), one of the most influential figures of the Danish modern movement, was renowned for his simple yet deeply refined furniture designs. While he is most famous for his seating designs, his work in cabinetry and shelving also demonstrates the same level of precision and respect for materials. Ry Møbler, one of Wegner’s primary manufacturing partners, produced several of his case pieces and smaller furniture designs during the mid-century period, contributing to the legacy of Danish modernism.

The shelf’s dimensions are 100 cm in width, 27 cm in depth, and 35 cm in height. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 39.4 inches wide, 10.6 inches deep, and 13.8 inches high. The piece is in excellent vintage condition, with minor surface patina, consistent with age and careful use, preserving the integrity of the original design.
