Niels O. Møller armchair
This rare model 62 armchair was designed by Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. It stands as a quintessential example of Scandinavian mid-century modern design, notable for its refined craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and sculptural fluidity.
The frame is crafted from solid rosewood, showcasing a deep reddish-brown hue with natural dark veining and a finely polished finish. The wood is expertly shaped into gently tapering legs and continuous curves that define the chair’s graceful silhouette. The backrest features three horizontal rails, each carved with a shallow arc to conform ergonomically to the back, providing both structural support and comfort.
The seat is upholstered in the original black leather, which remains in very good condition, displaying a subtle patina and minor creasing typical of age and use. The tight upholstery provides a refined contrast to the warm, variegated grain of the rosewood. The armrests are gently flared and seamlessly integrated into the frame, offering added comfort while preserving the chair’s light and open aesthetic.
Niels Otto Møller, trained as a cabinetmaker, founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1944 and was renowned for his dedication to quality materials and handcrafted production. Model 62 is among his most sophisticated armchair designs, striking a balance between visual delicacy and functional durability. The rosewood variant is particularly prized today due to later restrictions on the use of this wood, making surviving examples increasingly rare.
The chair measures 55.5 cm in width, 53 cm in depth, and 80.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 45 cm, approximately 21.9 x 20.9 x 31.7 inches, and a seat height of 17.7 inches.
