Niels O. Møller armchairs
This rare set of six armchairs, model 62, was designed by Niels O. Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark. Designed in 1962, the model reflects Møller’s refined approach to Danish modernism, characterized by sculptural shaping, seamless joinery, and a focus on tactile materials. Each chair is crafted in teak, a wood valued for its warm tone, dense structure, and ability to be shaped into fluid, organic forms.
The frames display gently curved posts and armrests that transition smoothly into one another, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with Møller’s workshop. The backrest consists of three horizontal rails, each slightly rounded and tapering at the ends, creating a visually light structure that still offers firm support. The rear legs rise as continuous vertical lines, subtly angled to align with the posture of the seated body.
The seats are upholstered in black leather, which provides a smooth, even surface contrasting with the grain of the teak. The leather is fitted tightly over a shaped seat frame, offering both comfort and durability. This combination of teak and leather is characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian design, balancing natural materials with a precise, modern aesthetic.
Niels O. Møller is known for designs that emphasize craftsmanship over industrial standardization, and model 62 is a distinct example of his work. The organic transitions between components and the avoidance of visible joinery reflect his pursuit of furniture that appears carved from a single continuous form. J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik was one of Denmark’s most respected manufacturers, known for meticulous hand-finishing and for producing chairs that maintained structural integrity for decades.
The set is in good vintage condition with small signs of usage and patina, such as minor wear to the teak surfaces and subtle aging of the leather. These traces are consistent with careful use and do not affect the stability or comfort of the chairs.
Each armchair measures 55.5 cm in width, 54 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 21.9 x 21.3 x 31.5 inches. The seat height is 46 cm (18.1 inches), and the arm height is 70 cm (27.6 inches).
