Axel Einar Hjorth console table
This very rare console table, model Louis, was designed by Swedish architect and designer Axel Einar Hjorth in 1928 and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden. Crafted from Macassar ebony, the table features carved giltwood decorative elements that provide a striking contrast to the dark wood. This piece belongs to the Louis series, introduced at NK’s November 1928 exhibition and later shown at the Swedish pavilion during the 1929 Barcelona World Exhibition and again in London in 1931. The design drawing for this particular table is dated August 6, 1928.
The table’s shape is defined by a triangular footprint with a straight rear edge and two angled front sides, resulting in a beveled-corner top. It stands on a matching triangular base that echoes the form of the tabletop. The structure is supported by three sculptural legs composed of curved uprights adorned with finely carved giltwood detailing on their interior surfaces. These legs curve downward and inward, creating a balanced visual rhythm and an elegant interplay between geometric form and decorative curves.
The surfaces are veneered in Macassar ebony with a high-gloss finish, emphasizing the exotic wood’s characteristic dark brown tones interspersed with reddish and black striations. The giltwood details on the legs are carved in a diagonal herringbone pattern, adding texture and ornamental emphasis.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a prominent figure in early 20th-century Swedish design and served as chief architect at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938. His work from the late 1920s merges international influences with Swedish craftsmanship, embodying a fusion of Swedish Grace and Art Deco aesthetics. The Louis series, named after the French royal style, stands out for its luxurious, formally decorative character, combining architectural symmetry with meticulous artisanal detail.
This console table exemplifies the early transition of Scandinavian modernism from neoclassical references toward more modern expressions, while maintaining a strong commitment to materials and fine craftsmanship.
The table measures 71 centimeters in width, 34 centimeters in depth, and 48.5 centimeters in height (approximately 28 x 13.4 x 19.1 inches).
