Hans Wegner easy chairs
This rare and early pair of easy chairs, model CH-27, was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949 and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark. Crafted from solid oak, the chairs feature handwoven cane seats and backrests, exemplifying Wegner’s dedication to natural materials and exceptional craftsmanship.
The design presents a low, wide stance with sharply raked rear legs that contribute to a dynamic silhouette, balanced by an ergonomically refined structure. The armrests are flat and slightly flared, seamlessly integrated into vertical back posts that curve gently into upward “horns” an iconic motif characteristic of Wegner’s work during this period. The cane weaving is precise and durable, composed of a tightly woven geometric pattern that combines resilience with visual delicacy.
The oak frames display a warm tone with even, visible grain and a medium matte patina that has developed naturally through time and use. Joinery is clean and robust, featuring smooth transitions between the sculpted legs, seat rails, and arms. The chairs are in very good condition, with some wear to the cane consistent with age, including minor losses; however, all structural elements remain intact, and the overall appearance harmonizes with the vintage character of the pieces.
Hans J. Wegner, a seminal figure in Danish Modernism, designed the CH-27 early in his longstanding collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn, a partnership that played a crucial role in shaping mid-century Danish furniture design.
Each chair measures 72 centimeters in width, 72 centimeters in depth, and 77 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 37 centimeters (approximately 28.3 x 28.3 x 30.3 inches, seat height 14.6 inches).
