Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chair
This rare easy chair, model Samsö, was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. The chair exemplifies Kofod-Larsen’s refined approach to modern Scandinavian furniture, characterized by organic forms, meticulous detailing, and expressive use of materials.
The frame is crafted from solid rosewood, displaying a rich tonal variation and pronounced grain typical of the species. It features tapered, rounded legs and subtly curved vertical back slats that provide both structural support and a sense of visual lightness. The armrests are sculpted with a smooth, sweeping curve, linking the front and rear legs in a fluid gesture reflective of Kofod-Larsen’s ergonomic design philosophy.
The cushions are upholstered in the original black leather, showing a natural patina and creasing consistent with careful use. Both seat and back cushions are generously padded. The rear of the chair is defined by three vertically aligned rosewood slats, spaced and curved to follow the contour of the back cushion.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was one of the most internationally acclaimed Danish designers of the mid-century period, known for his ability to combine sculptural modernism with fine craftsmanship. The Samsö model, less frequently seen, was produced by the Swedish manufacturer OPE Möbler, recognized for its high-quality execution and collaborations with leading Scandinavian designers.
The chair measures 72 cm in width (28.3 inches), 72 cm in depth (28.3 inches), and 77.5 cm in height (30.5 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). It is in very good vintage condition, with minor surface wear on the leather and light age-related marks on the wood, but remains structurally sound.
