Folke Bensow bench
This rare bench, known as “Parkbänk nr 2” was designed by Folke Bensow and produced by Näfveqvarns Bruk in Sweden in 1920. It exemplifies the Swedish Grace movement, a transitional style that merges classical influences with the emerging functional and modernist aesthetics of the early 20th century.
The bench features a cast iron frame distinguished by an intricate yet restrained design. The legs curve outward with a sculptural quality, ending in claw-like feet—a detail reminiscent of neoclassical metalwork. The sides are adorned with openwork panels showcasing a crossed motif and subtle decorative rosettes, imparting architectural elegance. The seat comprises painted wooden slats, which bear visible signs of aging, contributing to the bench’s authentic patina and historical character.
Näfveqvarns Bruk was a renowned Swedish foundry known for producing high-quality cast iron furniture and decorative elements. In the early 20th century, the company collaborated with designers like Folke Bensow, who specialized in crafting durable yet aesthetically refined public furniture. His designs skillfully combined industrial production methods with classical design principles, creating pieces that are both practical and artistically significant.
This bench remains in original condition, with wear consistent with its age and outdoor use on both the wood and cast iron components. It measures 113 cm in width, 41 cm in depth, and 55.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm (44.5 by 16.1 by 21.9 inches, seat height 16.9 inches). It stands as a rare and well-documented example of Swedish industrial craftsmanship.
