Folke Bensow bench
This very rare bench, “Parkbänk nr 1” was designed by Swedish architect and designer Folke Bensow and produced by Näfveqvarns Bruk in 1925. It represents an important example of the Swedish Grace movement—a Nordic variant of Art Deco—which blends classical ornamentation with modern simplicity. Notably, it was originally exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, the seminal event that shaped the Art Deco style worldwide.
The bench features a robust cast iron base adorned with intricate decorative elements such as sculpted volutes and a relief shell motif, lending refinement to its sturdy construction. The ironwork, crafted by Näfveqvarns Bruk—a premier Swedish foundry known for precision and durability—exemplifies high-quality industrial craftsmanship. The seating surface is composed of original wooden planks that have aged gracefully, exhibiting a rich patina and authentic wear consistent with outdoor use.
Folke Bensow was a prominent figure in Swedish architecture and industrial design, celebrated for integrating durability with aesthetic appeal in urban furniture. His partnership with Näfveqvarns Bruk produced several iconic cast iron works that remain significant in Scandinavian design history.
The bench measures 179 cm in width, 65 cm in overall depth (with a seat depth of 43 cm), and 53 cm in height, including a seat height of 43 cm (70.5 x 25.6 inches; seat depth 16.9 inches; height 20.9 inches; seat height 16.9 inches). This piece stands as a rare and well-preserved artifact of early 20th-century Nordic design heritage.
