Børge Mogensen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model BM-2256, also known as “Slædestolen” (the Sled Chair), was designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. Crafted from solid oak with woven cane seats and backrests, along with brass hardware, these chairs are iconic examples of Mogensen’s functionalist approach to furniture design, combining structural honesty with thoughtful comfort and clarity of form.
The design features a rectilinear oak frame, constructed with exposed joinery and deliberate proportions. The oak has a light, warm tone that highlights its natural grain structure. The sled-like base frame gives the chairs a stable, grounded visual rhythm. The seat and backrest are made of hand-woven cane, set within oak frames and slightly reclined for enhanced comfort. Brass fittings secure the cane panels at subtle hinge points, allowing flexibility and ease of maintenance. The chair’s profile is distinguished by its wide stance, low height, and upright armrests, balancing architectural precision with a relaxed seating posture.
Børge Mogensen was a prominent figure in Danish modernism and a student of Kaare Klint. His work focused on designing democratic, durable furniture for everyday use, emphasizing high craftsmanship, utility, and understated aesthetics. His furniture often incorporated traditional woodworking techniques, adapted to suit modern living. His collaborations with Fredericia Stolefabrik resulted in some of his most influential designs, including this model.
Fredericia Stolefabrik, founded in 1911, became closely associated with Mogensen in the mid-20th century, producing many of his signature pieces. The company played a central role in developing functional, high-quality Danish furniture for both institutional and domestic settings.
The chairs are in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age-related wear. The oak frames retain their structure and finish, while the cane is intact with no major losses. The brass elements show subtle patina, consistent with the period.
Each chair measures 66 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 66 cm in height, with a seat height of 29 cm. In imperial units, these dimensions correspond to approximately 26 inches wide, 29.5 inches deep, 26 inches high, with a seat height of 11.4 inches.
