Easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, attributed to an unknown designer and produced in Sweden during the 1940s, exemplifies early Scandinavian design principles with an emphasis on craftsmanship, natural materials, and balanced proportions. Constructed from dark-stained oak, the chairs feature a rectilinear yet softly nuanced profile, highlighted by gently curved armrests and a slightly reclined backrest for comfort.
The backrests are composed of handwoven natural leather straps arranged in a tight grid pattern, displaying a rich, warm patina that speaks to their age and use while remaining structurally stable. The seats have been newly reupholstered in a white bouclé fabric, providing a tactile contrast that complements the darker wood frame and respects the original character of the chairs.
The woodwork is in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor wear consistent with age, while the upholstery is pristine and executed with traditional techniques. Though the designer remains unidentified, the chairs reflect a thoughtful material layering approach—combining oak, leather, and textured fabric—that foreshadows trends in later Scandinavian modernist furniture.
The dimensions measure 53.5 cm in width, 56.5 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height, with a seat height of 34 cm. In imperial units, these correspond to approximately 21.1 inches wide, 22.2 inches deep, 29.1 inches high, and a seat height of 13.4 inches.
