Information

This is a pair of “Ari” easy chairs designed by Swedish designer Arne Norell in 1966 and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden. These lounge chairs are among Norell’s most iconic and internationally recognized works and exemplify his commitment to combining modern aesthetics with high-quality craftsmanship and comfort.

The design is distinguished by its elegant and expressive chromed steel frame, which features a sculptural and flowing silhouette with cantilevered legs that arch outward in a distinctive curve. The seat and backrest are generously cushioned and upholstered in original black leather, arranged in segmented horizontal channels that provide both comfort and visual rhythm. Each chair includes a detachable headrest secured with leather straps, further enhancing its functional and ergonomic form. The leather has developed a rich and authentic patina, showing natural creases, subtle toning, and signs of honest use consistent with age, yet remains in excellent vintage condition structurally and aesthetically.

Arne Norell (1917–1971) was known for his innovative use of materials and his embrace of international design influences, particularly from Danish modernism. The Ari chair reflects his interest in combining sleek metal structures with soft leather elements to create a modern yet inviting character. After its debut, the Ari chair gained significant acclaim and was awarded “Showpiece of the Year” by the British Furniture Manufacturers in 1973, further cementing Norell’s reputation on the international stage.

The chairs are representative of the late modernist movement of the 1960s, where the fusion of industrial materials such as steel with traditional upholstery conveyed a forward-looking aesthetic grounded in comfort and craftsmanship. The use of buckle-fastened leather elements across the back of the frame emphasizes both the structural role of the material and its decorative value.

Each chair measures 65 cm wide, 92 cm deep, and 77 cm high, with a seat height of 35 cm (25.6 x 36.2 x 30.3 inches, seat height 13.8 inches). The proportions are designed for a deeply reclined, relaxed seating position, ideal for a lounge or reading setting. These chairs remain exemplary pieces of Scandinavian modern design and continue to be appreciated for their sculptural qualities and exceptional comfort.
