Børge Mogensen dining chairs
This is a rare set of six dining chairs, model 155, also known as the “shell chair” designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Søborg Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. The design reflects Mogensen’s dedication to functionality, craftsmanship, and honest material expression—hallmarks of the Danish modern movement.
Each chair features a sculptural seat and backrest formed from teak plywood with visible grain patterns that vary from piece to piece, offering a natural, textural richness. The shell-like curves of the back and seat provide ergonomic support while maintaining a minimalist profile. The teak elements display a medium brown tone with darker figuring, and the patina shows age-appropriate wear including minor surface marks and light scuffing, consistent with vintage use.
The frames are constructed from dark-stained beech wood, providing a strong contrast to the teak shells. The legs taper subtly toward the floor, connected by cross-stretchers that enhance structural integrity and visual rhythm. The rear legs are angled backward to support the tilt of the backrest, a gesture that improves comfort and stability.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was one of the most influential figures in Danish modern furniture design, known for his work with Fredericia and Søborg Møbler, among others. He trained under Kaare Klint and emphasized the importance of utility and simplicity. Mogensen’s designs remain enduringly popular for their blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern form.
Søborg Møbler was an important Danish manufacturer that collaborated with several leading designers of the era. Their production quality was consistently high, and pieces such as this model 155 demonstrate careful attention to joinery, finishing, and balance between aesthetics and comfort.
The chairs remain in good original condition with structurally sound frames and authentic patinated surfaces. They are suitable for use or display in period-conscious interiors.
Each chair measures 50 cm in width, 47 cm in depth, and 77 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm. These dimensions are equivalent to approximately 19.7 inches wide, 18.5 inches deep, 30.3 inches high, and 16.5 inches in seat height.
