Information

This rare freestanding desk was produced in Denmark during the 1960s and combines rosewood and brass in a sculptural expression of Scandinavian mid-century design. The piece demonstrates a formal clarity and architectural balance, featuring a cantilevered tabletop supported asymmetrically: one end rests on a slender brass rod leg, while the other is anchored by a substantial storage pedestal. This juxtaposition creates a striking visual tension and dynamic silhouette.

The tabletop is made of richly grained rosewood, displaying dramatic swirling patterns and a lustrous finish characteristic of Brazilian rosewood, a highly prized material in Danish furniture before trade restrictions in the 1970s. The brass leg provides a refined contrast in tone and material, adding structural lightness and elegance.

The integrated storage unit contains drawers on the user’s side and a cabinet with doors on the reverse. The drawer fronts are subtly curved and fitted with solid brass pulls shaped organically to fit the hand. The entire case rests on a black lacquered recessed plinth base, which visually grounds the piece while allowing the top and storage section to appear as if floating. The precision of veneer matching, joinery, and metalwork reflects a high level of craftsmanship.

The desk is in very good condition, with minor age-related wear. The rosewood finish is well preserved, and the brass leg retains its original patina with only slight surface oxidation typical for its age. All drawers and doors function smoothly.

While the designer is unknown, the desk’s formal composition and material execution suggest influence from prominent Danish cabinetmakers and architectural designers active in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Its freestanding design makes it suitable for central room placement, with all sides thoughtfully detailed.

The desk measures 200 cm in width, 95 cm in depth, and 73.5 cm in height—approximately 78.7 inches wide, 37.4 inches deep, and 28.9 inches high.
