Wengé side tables

Item number: 135170Category: Seating
Information

This rare pair of side tables or benches was produced in Sweden during the 1960s by an unknown designer. Each piece features a long rectangular top crafted from wengé wood, exhibiting a dark brown finish with a fine linear grain. The flat surface has sharply defined edges and shows subtle wear consistent with its age, including minor nicks and marks along the corners and top plane.

Supporting the top are evenly spaced square legs made of black lacquered metal. Each leg terminates in a small, rounded brass foot that provides visual contrast while protecting the floor. The combination of materials reflects a minimalist yet refined approach characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, emphasizing durable hardwoods and honest, straightforward structural elements.

The design’s visual language is geometric and precise, softened by the tactile finish of the wengé wood and the warm detailing of the brass feet. Although the designer remains unidentified, the functional and architectural form aligns closely with the rational aesthetics prevalent in Swedish contract furniture as well as the broader international modernist movements of the 1960s.

Each piece measures 205 centimeters in width, 41.5 centimeters in depth, and 35.5 centimeters in height (approximately 80.7 x 16.3 x 14 inches). The proportions make them suitable for use as low benches, platforms for display, or side tables within a larger modular seating arrangement. Both are in very good vintage condition, exhibiting surface patina and minor wear typical of age and use.
