Information

This rare sideboard, model BM57, was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Børge Mogensen in 1957 and produced by the cabinetmaker P. Lauritsen & Søn in Denmark. Constructed primarily from solid oak with veneered surfaces, the piece exemplifies Mogensen’s early functionalist approach, drawing clear inspiration from traditional Shaker furniture. The design is characterized by its geometric clarity, visible brass hardware—including strap hinges and key escutcheons—and a sled base frame that emphasizes stability and clean lines.

The cabinet features a rectangular form with a flat top and two doors. Inside, the storage layout includes adjustable shelving and four drawers fitted with semi-circular cut-out handles, allowing for flexible and modular organization. The front is symmetrical and understated, with the natural oak grain prominently displayed to highlight the material’s warmth and the craftsmanship involved. The brass fittings provide a subtle but distinct contrast to the wood, contributing to the piece’s balanced material composition.

The sideboard remains in very good vintage condition, showing minor signs of age and use consistent with careful preservation. The finish exhibits an even patina developed over time, particularly evident on the brass hardware, which enhances the cabinet’s authentic mid-century character.

Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a seminal figure in Danish modern design, celebrated for creating furniture that is both durable and practical, with an emphasis on clarity and simplicity. His collaboration with P. Lauritsen & Søn in the 1950s marked a significant phase in his career during which he refined his design philosophy grounded in functionalism and democratic ideals.

This sideboard is an exemplary representation of the mid-century Scandinavian modern movement, notable for its clean lines, use of natural materials, and focus on usability.

The dimensions of the sideboard are 138 centimeters in width, 50 centimeters in depth, and 90 centimeters in height (approximately 54.3 x 19.7 x 35.4 inches).
