Östen Kristiansson cabinet

This rare wall-mounted cabinet was designed by Östen Kristiansson and produced by Luxus in Vittsjö, Sweden during the 1960s. Crafted from teak, the cabinet displays a warm, even grain with a matte finish that highlights the natural reddish-brown tones characteristic of Scandinavian teak furniture from this era. The rectangular form features two hinged doors, each revealing a distinct internal arrangement: one side contains an open compartment with a single shelf, while the other houses three shaped black Formica drawers, providing organized storage.

The door fronts show refined detailing. One door is accented with a black Formica panel embellished with an abstract aluminium line motif, while the other remains plain teak with a softly sculpted finger pull integrated into the edge. The incorporation of Formica introduces a subtle contrast in both texture and color, enhancing the cabinet’s modernist visual appeal. Aluminium hardware elements are sparingly and thoughtfully applied, reinforcing the piece’s minimal yet functional aesthetic.

Östen Kristiansson (1927–2003) was a noted Swedish designer known for his contributions to lighting and cabinetry within the mid-century modern tradition. Closely linked to the family-owned Luxus company, Kristiansson’s work is characterized by clean lines, functional design, and the thoughtful integration of natural materials with modern elements like acrylic and Formica.

Luxus, founded in the 1950s in Vittsjö, gained recognition for producing high-quality Scandinavian modern furniture and lighting. Their 1960s output is particularly noted for modularity and architectural simplicity combined with meticulous material finish and utility.

This cabinet is in very good vintage condition, showing minimal wear. The teak has aged evenly and retains its original finish, while the Formica surfaces are clean. The internal compartments are structurally sound and fully functional.

The cabinet measures 77 cm in width, 26 cm in depth, and 45 cm in height (approximately 30.3 by 10.2 by 17.7 inches).
