Børge Mogensen dining table
This very rare dining table or desk was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1953 and produced by Søborg Møbler in Denmark. The design reflects Mogensen’s functionalist philosophy and emphasis on practical, honest materials. The tabletop is crafted from teak, showcasing a warm reddish-brown tone with a fine, even grain and a softly lustrous surface. The rectangular top features subtly beveled edges, lending an elegant thinness and clarity to its form.
The base consists of four splayed tubular steel legs with visible welding and bracing, arranged in a lightweight yet rigid triangular structure. The contrast between the warm teak and the cool, industrial galvanized steel embodies mid-century Danish design’s exploration of modern materials. The structural geometry highlights function through clear, engineered form while maintaining visual lightness.
The table remains in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with age and use, including small scuffs and patina on the steel and slight surface marks on the wood. The piece is stamped “Made in Denmark” alongside the Søborg Møbler mark, featuring a stylized galleon emblem.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a seminal figure in Danish modern design. Educated at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kaare Klint, Mogensen worked with FDB Møbler and later collaborated closely with several major Danish manufacturers. Søborg Møbler, founded in 1890, was among the producers known for realizing Mogensen’s designs with craftsmanship and a focus on functional, understated furniture.
This table exemplifies Mogensen’s early post-war work, blending structural clarity with a restrained aesthetic. It reflects the broader Scandinavian modern movement of the 1950s, emphasizing democratic design, usability, and material integrity.
The dimensions are 180 cm wide, 90.5 cm deep, and 74 cm high (approximately 70.9 by 35.6 by 29.1 inches).
