Frits Henningsen dining table
This rare dining table was designed and produced by Danish cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen in the 1940s. Crafted primarily from mahogany, the table features a rich, warm tone with fine grain on the main tabletop and two of the extension leaves. The remaining two extension leaves are made from stained pine, providing a subtle contrast in both texture and hue.
The table’s form is defined by an elegant, softly rounded rectangular top with gently curved edges. The slightly tapered legs contribute to a refined and understated aesthetic that balances functionality with visual harmony. The extendable design allows for flexible seating arrangements, with a central support leg added when fully extended to ensure stability. When fully extended with all four leaves, the table reaches a length of 355 cm (139.8 inches).
Frits Henningsen was a master cabinetmaker and furniture designer renowned for his meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to traditional manufacturing techniques. Unlike many contemporaries, he remained directly involved in the production of his pieces, ensuring consistent quality and attention to detail. His work is noted for its refined proportions, expert joinery, and timeless elegance.
The table measures 140 cm in width and 110 cm in depth (55.1 by 43.3 inches) with a height of 72.5 cm (28.5 inches). It is in well-preserved condition, with a surface that exhibits a natural patina and signs of careful use consistent with its age.
