Information

This rare and large ceiling lamp, model no. 1988, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s, exemplifies Tynell’s masterful blend of function and refined decorative artistry within Scandinavian mid-century lighting design. The lamp features an elongated, oval-shaped brass shade with a gently domed profile, creating a sculptural and sophisticated presence that commands attention in any interior.

The brass surface is subtly perforated, introducing texture while enhancing the diffusion of light to create a nuanced glow. A defining characteristic of this model is the pleated silk diffuser beneath the shade, arranged in a radial pattern that softens the light and generates a warm, atmospheric ambiance. This delicate pleating draws the eye toward the center of the fixture, balancing the lamp’s organic form with intricate detailing.

Encircling the upper section of the shade is a fine brass coil, a signature embellishment typical of Tynell’s aesthetic, which adds a refined decorative layer to the otherwise minimal and elegant design. The lamp is suspended by two slender brass rods that emphasize its floating appearance, reinforcing a sense of lightness despite its generous proportions.

Measuring 80 cm in width (31.5 inches), 52.5 cm in depth (20.7 inches), and 155 cm in height (61 inches), this ceiling lamp is ideally suited for large interiors such as dining rooms or living areas, where it serves as both a functional light source and a statement piece. It stands as a testament to Paavo Tynell’s craftsmanship, seamlessly merging premium materials, sophisticated detailing, and organic structure into a timeless work of art.
