Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
Rare and early “Starry Sky” ceiling lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy, Finland, during the 1950s. This highly sought-after model is among Tynell’s most distinctive lighting designs, combining refined craftsmanship with his celebrated ability to create atmospheric illumination. The rectangular shade is perforated with numerous small openings, allowing points of light to shine through the surface and creating the characteristic “starry sky” effect that has become synonymous with Tynell’s work.
The lamp is executed in its original red lacquered finish with brass details and an intricate brass louvre diffuser beneath. This layered construction softens and directs the light while producing a warm, ambient glow. When illuminated, the perforations transform the shade into a constellation of tiny points of light, while the brass grid below reflects and diffuses the light source, creating a rich and intimate atmosphere. The contrast between the deep red lacquer and the warm brass surfaces gives the lamp a striking architectural presence both lit and unlit.
Paavo Tynell is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Scandinavian lighting design, and his work for Taito Oy remains among the most collectible examples of twentieth-century lighting. The “Starry Sky” series perfectly illustrates his poetic approach to light, where decorative perforations and carefully considered materials create an experience extending beyond pure functionality.
The lamp can be mounted either as a suspended ceiling fixture or as a flush-mounted ceiling light, offering versatility while retaining its strong sculptural character. Its substantial proportions and rare original finish make it an exceptional example of Finnish mid-century lighting design.
The lamp remains in vintage condition with heavy signs of age and use. The original red lacquer shows wear and losses to the finish, particularly concentrated on one side, while the brass surfaces display oxidation, patina, and age-related markings consistent with its history. These traces of time contribute to the lamp’s authentic character and underline its originality.
