Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This height-adjustable ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. It features a conical brass shade with a perforated surface, allowing light to softly filter through in a decorative manner. The lower rim of the shade is fitted with a scalloped glass diffuser, which provides both direct downward illumination and a softened ambient glow.
A distinctive aspect of this lamp is its height-adjustment mechanism, which uses a counterweight system integrated into the brass structure, enabling the fixture to be easily raised or lowered. This technical innovation is characteristic of Tynell’s work, which harmonizes elegant aesthetics with functional design. Over time, the brass elements have developed a natural patina, enhancing the lamp’s character while preserving its craftsmanship.
Paavo Tynell was a pioneering Finnish lighting designer celebrated for his refined use of brass, glass, and perforated metal. His collaboration with Taito Oy was instrumental in shaping Scandinavian modernist lighting, influencing both residential and institutional interiors throughout the mid-20th century.
The lamp measures 35 cm (13.8 inches) in diameter, with an adjustable height ranging from 120 cm to 140 cm (47.2 to 55.1 inches).
