Josef Frank table lamps
This rare pair of table lamps, model 2467, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamps feature a brass construction with a slender, straight stem rising from a three-point base. The base is characterized by gently rounded edges and small feet, providing stability while maintaining an elegant and delicate profile. Each lamp retains its original conical fabric lampshade in a warm yellow tone, accented by a thin trim along the top and bottom edges. The shade is secured by a brass finial, completing the refined and cohesive design.
Josef Frank, an Austrian-Swedish architect and designer, was a pivotal figure in the Scandinavian Modern movement. His tenure at Svenskt Tenn was marked by an emphasis on functional and timeless design infused with warmth and softness, often contrasting with the more rigid modernist styles of his contemporaries. Frank’s work harmoniously blended classical influences with modern materials, resulting in designs that remain highly sought after today.
Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, is one of Sweden’s most esteemed design houses, renowned for its craftsmanship and innovative approach to furniture and lighting. Under Frank’s artistic direction, the company produced a series of iconic designs that shaped Swedish design throughout the mid-20th century.
These lamps embody the principles of Scandinavian Modernism through their use of brass, simple geometric forms, and a balance between function and aesthetics. The combination of the warm fabric shades and brass frames provides soft, diffused lighting, contributing to a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
The pair is in good vintage condition, exhibiting age-related patina on the brass and minor wear consistent with the lamps’ period. Each lamp measures 40 cm in diameter and 58 cm in height (approximately 15.7 by 22.8 inches).
