Information

This rare wall lamp is a variant of model 1040, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp is crafted from copper and features a cylindrical perforated shade, which allows light to filter through in a carefully structured pattern. Over time, the copper surface has developed a natural patina, exhibiting the characteristic greenish hues associated with aged metal. The lamp is mounted on a short, angled arm that connects to a circular wall plate, combining practical mounting with elegant form.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a prominent Swedish designer celebrated for his contributions to lighting design. As founder and chief designer at Ateljé Lyktan, Bergström was instrumental in defining Scandinavian modern lighting. His work emphasized innovative forms, material exploration, and techniques for diffusing light effectively. Perforated metal, diffusers, and organic shapes are recurrent elements in his designs, which aim to produce atmospheric and functional illumination.

Ateljé Lyktan, established in 1934, earned a reputation as one of Sweden’s foremost lighting manufacturers, known for handcrafted, high-quality lighting solutions suited to both residential and commercial interiors. Bergström’s mid-century designs were influential in setting the standard for modern Scandinavian lighting, balancing utility and aesthetic expression.

This lamp exemplifies Bergström’s skill in using perforation patterns to create ambient light effects, casting soft, diffused illumination alongside distinctive shadow projections. It functions as both a practical light source and a decorative object.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing a well-preserved patina and minor surface wear consistent with its age. Its dimensions are 14.5 cm in width, 23 cm in depth, and 23.5 cm in height (approximately 5.7 by 9 by 9.3 inches).
