Information

This very rare floor lamp, model “The Question Mark” was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1940s. Its most distinctive feature is a gracefully curved brass stem shaped like a question mark, which gives the lamp its name and unique silhouette. The structure is made from bronze-patinated brass that has developed a natural patina over time, enhancing its vintage appeal. The lamp stands on a circular, weighted base that shows signs of age and use, consistent with its period.

The lamp retains its original multi-shade glass system, designed to optimize light distribution and minimize glare—core principles in Henningsen’s lighting philosophy. The uppermost shade is wide and shallow, directing light downward, while two inner frosted glass shades diffuse the light evenly, ensuring comfortable, glare-free illumination.

Poul Henningsen was a pioneering Danish architect and lighting designer, renowned for his scientific and innovative approach to light diffusion. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen resulted in some of the most iconic Scandinavian lighting designs of the 20th century, blending functionality with sculptural elegance.

Louis Poulsen, a leading Danish lighting manufacturer, played a crucial role in bringing Henningsen’s designs to life, producing fixtures celebrated for their timeless combination of form and function.

This lamp exemplifies Danish Modernism through its balance of technical innovation and refined aesthetics. The sculptural brass form combined with the frosted glass shades creates a piece that is both visually striking and highly functional.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, exhibiting a visible patina on the brass that adds character. The original glass shades are well preserved, showing minor wear consistent with age. Its dimensions are 28 cm in width, 37 cm in depth, and 154 cm in height (approximately 11 by 14.6 by 60.6 inches).
