Information

This rare ceiling lamp or flush mount fixture was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1940s. The lamp features a shallow, inverted cone-shaped shade crafted from finely pleated linen fabric, supported by a central brass rod with a matching ceiling canopy and finial. The off-white linen is lightly textured, diffusing light warmly and evenly. The radial pleating enhances the sculptural presence of the fixture, especially noticeable in dim lighting conditions.

The brass components exhibit a natural warm patina with minor spotting, typical of mid-century untreated brass. The original linen shade shows subtle discoloration and wear consistent with its age but remains structurally sound with an intact internal frame.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, was a seminal figure in Swedish lighting design. His work from the 1930s and 1940s marked a shift from traditional styles toward modern functionalism, blending textile craftsmanship with industrial materials. This lamp reflects his early post-functional modernist approach, emphasizing form, materiality, and atmospheric quality.

Produced by Ateljé Lyktan, a key innovator in Swedish lighting throughout the 20th century, this fixture exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, known for its elegance, tactile surfaces, and balance of utility with warmth.

The lamp measures 51 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height (approximately 20 by 15.7 inches). It is in good vintage condition, showing age-appropriate wear on the brass and linen, and retains all original elements and proportions.
