Information

This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. It exemplifies Tynell’s sculptural approach to lighting design, characterized by an elegant interplay of refined materials, lightness of form, and meticulous decorative craftsmanship. The fixture features eight gently curved arms crafted from polished brass, each terminating in a tulip-shaped glass shade in a pale blue tone. When illuminated, the shades emit a soft, warm light with a subtle tonal gradation that shifts from bluish-white at the base to translucent white at the top.

The lamp’s slender central brass stem extends vertically to a conical ceiling canopy and is adorned with decorative brass coils and finials at each glass mount. The arms radiate from a central cluster of horizontal, undulating brass elements—a distinctive ornamental motif that is characteristic of Tynell’s mid-century work. This design balances minimalist structural lines with ornate detailing, reflecting the aesthetics of Scandinavian modernism during that era.

The lamp has been fully restored and is in good vintage condition, showing only minor age-appropriate wear consistent with careful use. The electrical components have been replaced and updated to meet contemporary safety standards while preserving the lamp’s original integrity.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a seminal figure in Finnish lighting design, celebrated for his poetic use of form and materials. His work often combined brass with glass, perforated metals, and delicate hand craftsmanship. As a co-founder of Taito Oy in 1918, Tynell played a pivotal role in Finnish lighting throughout the mid-20th century. His designs were frequently commissioned for prominent public and architectural projects, establishing his legacy as a defining force in Finnish modern design.

The lamp measures 66 cm in diameter (approximately 26 inches) and 145 cm in height (approximately 57 inches).
