Floor lamp
This rare floor lamp from the 1950s was produced in Sweden and exemplifies the Scandinavian modern design ethos of the period, characterized by clean lines, restrained decoration, and high-quality materials. Although the designer is unidentified, the lamp’s form and detailing are consistent with mid-century Swedish lighting aesthetics.
The lamp features a three-arm structure branching symmetrically from a single central stem, all fabricated in solid brass. The brass has acquired a warm patina over time, offering a subdued luster that enhances the aged character of the piece. The base is a low, rounded disc form that anchors the composition visually and physically, ensuring stability despite the upward-reaching design.
Each arm culminates in a light fitting clad in opaline glass diffusers and surmounted by conical fabric shades. The shades are rendered in a pleated off-white textile, providing a soft texture contrast to the reflective brass and diffused glow when lit. The opaline glass covers serve to evenly distribute the light while hiding the bulbs from direct view, a typical mid-century technique to create ambient rather than direct illumination.
The lamp includes small toggle switches set into each brass socket, allowing for individual control of each light source. The sockets are ventilated with cross-perforated bands, contributing both functional heat dissipation and decorative detail.
The condition is good vintage, with minimal signs of age-appropriate wear visible primarily on the brass surfaces and light fixtures. The shades are well preserved, showing no major discoloration or tears. The construction remains structurally intact.
Stylistically, the piece fits well within the Scandinavian modern tradition, merging practical lighting design with sculptural form and quality craftsmanship. The organic symmetry of the arms evokes botanical references, a recurrent motif in Swedish lighting design of the era.
The lamp measures 163 cm in height and has a diameter of 33 cm, equivalent to approximately 64.2 inches high and 13 inches in diameter.
