Floor lamp
This very rare height adjustable floor lamp was produced in Sweden during the 1950s and represents a refined example of Swedish Modern design. The construction combines brass, ash, and cane, reflecting the material sensibility typical of Scandinavian mid-century production, where natural materials were paired with metal components in carefully balanced proportions. The lamp demonstrates a functional approach to adjustability while maintaining a restrained and sculptural silhouette.
The circular base is executed in solid ash, constructed from joined segments with clearly visible grain patterns running in alternating directions. The wood displays warm honey and light amber tones with subtle variation across the surface. The edge of the base is softly rounded, giving the otherwise strict circular form a gentle profile. A brass fitting secures the vertical shaft to the base, creating a clear visual transition between wood and metal. The ash surface shows minor wear and small marks consistent with age and use, without structural damage.
The upright column is wrapped in tightly coiled cane, forming a rhythmic horizontal texture along the vertical axis. The cane varies slightly in tone from light caramel to deeper brown, showing natural irregularities and minor patina developed over time. This organic surface contrasts with the smooth brass elements above and below. The upper section of the lamp consists of a slender brass stem that extends upward and transitions into a softly curved arm. The curve is fluid and asymmetrical, projecting the light source outward while preserving balance. The brass has developed a muted golden tone with darker areas and light oxidation, consistent with vintage condition.
The lamp is height adjustable between 155 cm and 180 cm, corresponding to approximately 61 inches to 70.9 inches. The adjustment mechanism is integrated into the brass section above the cane-wrapped column, allowing the upper stem to extend while maintaining proportional coherence. The technical solution is discreet and does not interrupt the visual continuity of the form.
The shade is newly produced and measures 46 cm in diameter and 27 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 18.1 inches in diameter and 10.6 inches in height. It is executed in a light, neutral fabric with a slightly tapered cylindrical shape. When illuminated, the shade emits a warm and even light, directed downward and diffused laterally through the textile surface. The new shade complements the aged materials of the base and structure while respecting the original design language.
The overall composition reflects the principles of Swedish Modern design, where craftsmanship, natural materials, and restrained geometry were central. The combination of ash, cane, and brass situates the lamp firmly within the Scandinavian 1950s tradition, bridging decorative warmth and functional clarity. The lamp remains in good vintage condition with small signs of usage, including minor surface wear and patination to the brass components, consistent with its age and authenticity.
