Tapio Wirkkala vases
Rare pair of “Kantarelli” glass vases designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Iittala in Finland. These sculptural pieces, created in 1955, are among the most celebrated examples of Wirkkala’s organic glass design language, where inspiration from nature and precise craftsmanship meet in harmonious form.
The vases are crafted in clear, finely ribbed glass with a delicate optical pattern that accentuates their fluid shapes. Their forms — one lower and wider, the other taller and more elongated — evoke the silhouette of a chanterelle mushroom, a recurring motif in Wirkkala’s work. The glass is mouth-blown and hand-finished, highlighting the high level of artistry and technical mastery typical of Iittala’s production during the mid-20th century.
Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was one of Finland’s most influential designers and artists, known for his work across glass, wood, and metal. His collaborations with Iittala helped define the aesthetics of Scandinavian modernism and brought Finnish design to international prominence.
Both pieces remain in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with age. They represent quintessential mid-century Scandinavian glass design — timeless, functional, and deeply rooted in nature.
