Torsten Johansson tray

This round tray was designed by Torsten Johansson and produced by AB Formträ in Sweden during the 1950s. It is crafted from laminated rosewood, illustrating key Scandinavian mid-century modern design principles such as clean geometry, respect for material integrity, and functional refinement. The tray’s form features a circular base with a continuous bentwood sidewall, demonstrating the technical expertise of molded woodwork that was characteristic of AB Formträ’s production techniques.

The rosewood presents a dark reddish-brown color with prominent, flowing grain patterns visible beneath a matte finish, which enhances the natural texture of the wood. The sidewall is seamlessly bent into a smooth cylindrical shape and joined with a contrasting circular wooden plug that serves both to reinforce the construction and add a subtle decorative element. Two circular cut-out handles are integrated into the sidewall, providing practical grip while maintaining the tray’s minimalist and streamlined profile.

Torsten Johansson was an active furniture and industrial designer in mid-20th century Sweden, recognized for his work related to bentwood manufacturing. AB Formträ, based in Bodafors, was a pioneering Scandinavian company known for its development of molded veneer and bentwood techniques in the postwar era, combining craftsmanship with modernist design ideals.

The tray is preserved in very good vintage condition, exhibiting only light surface wear and a gentle patina consistent with its age and use. Its compact, balanced proportions make it versatile for both decorative display and practical serving functions.

The dimensions measure 32 cm in diameter and 5.5 cm in height, approximately 12.6 inches in diameter and 2.2 inches high.
