Axel Einar Hjorth coffee table

This rare coffee table was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced in his own studio in Nyköping, Sweden, during the 1940s. It exemplifies Scandinavian functionalism, combining modernist principles with traditional craftsmanship. The table is made from elm wood, featuring a raw textured glass top that adds a tactile contrast to the natural wood beneath. The tabletop is asymmetrical with softly rounded edges, creating a gentle organic form that balances the geometric composition of the base.

The base consists of intersecting wooden panels arranged in a visually light yet stable construction, demonstrating Hjorth’s skill in merging structural integrity with sculptural aesthetics. His design language, developed during his time as chief architect at Nordiska Kompaniet and refined in his independent studio, reflects a deep respect for material honesty and balanced proportions.

Axel Einar Hjorth’s independent production in Nyköping was brief, which makes furniture from this period particularly rare and sought after. This coffee table remains in very good condition, with a well-maintained patina that enhances the natural elm grain and complements the textured glass.
