Hans-Agne Jakobsson candlestick
This is a rare candlestick, model L-40, created by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his eponymous firm Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s. The model reflects Jakobsson’s refined approach to atmospheric lighting and his interest in material contrasts and transparency.
The piece is composed of a cylindrical brass base and a removable glass shade. The brass is finished in a warm golden tone with a naturally aged surface that exhibits light patina, mild oxidation, and small signs of use, consistent with its vintage character. The cylindrical shade is made of subtly tinted smoked glass with a soft pink-brown hue. The transparency of the glass and the reflective quality of the brass allow the candlelight to diffuse gently, creating a warm and ambient glow when in use.
The design is defined by its simple cylindrical geometry and modular construction. The glass fits precisely over the brass collar, resting on an interior flange. The brass candle holder is recessed and aligned centrally within the base, forming a secure and stable platform for a taper candle. The minimalist silhouette and delicate material interplay reflect Jakobsson’s broader body of work, where he often softened the structural clarity of modernism with organic materials and warm lighting effects.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a prolific Swedish designer known for his contributions to postwar Scandinavian lighting. His work is characterized by its sculptural sensitivity and an emphasis on diffused illumination, often achieved through innovative use of materials such as glass, brass, and wood veneer. Jakobsson established his studio in Markaryd in 1951 and gained international recognition for lighting that blended functional precision with decorative softness.
This model L-40 candlestick remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of surface wear and aged brass oxidation. The glass shade is free from cracks or chips and retains its original subtle coloration.
