Hans-Agne Jakobsson candlestick

The L-95 candlestick, also known as Rasmus, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden. It is a refined and atmospheric lighting object that reflects Jakobsson’s signature approach to light diffusion, material contrast, and understated decorative detail—hallmarks of his mid-century Scandinavian design legacy.

The candlestick features a cylindrical glass shade in a warm yellow to amber tone, with a softly domed top and smooth, rounded contours. The hue of the glass is translucent and richly saturated, casting a gentle, golden glow when lit. This quality of light, both warm and diffuse, is central to Jakobsson’s philosophy of creating ambient, mood-enhancing illumination in domestic spaces.

The glass sits atop a polished brass base, which is perforated with a regular pattern of repeating cross-shaped cutouts. This perforation adds a subtle layer of decoration and texture, while also allowing glimpses of candlelight to pass through the brass when in use. The circular base provides stability and a balanced visual anchor for the more delicate glass component.

The juxtaposition of materials—the cool, polished brass with its reflective quality and the soft, honey-like glow of the amber glass—demonstrates Jakobsson’s sensitivity to material interplay and light behavior. The result is a piece that is both functional and sculptural, ideal as a table accent or as part of a broader mid-century lighting arrangement.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a leading figure in Swedish lighting design, best known for his work that prioritized atmospheric lighting and the emotional impact of softly diffused light. While his larger pendant lamps and floor lamps are often celebrated, pieces like the L-95 Rasmus show his same attention to detail and philosophy in smaller-scale designs.

This example remains in very good vintage condition. The brass base retains much of its original polish, with minor surface scratches and light patina consistent with its age. The amber glass is clear and pristine, free from chips, cracks, or visible wear.

The dimensions are 11 cm in diameter and 18.5 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 4.3 inches in diameter and 7.3 inches in height.
