Erik Höglund candelabra
This mid-century hanging candelabra, designed by Erik Höglund and produced by Boda Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1960s, is a compelling synthesis of rustic craftsmanship and modernist composition. Executed in hand-forged wrought iron and incorporating blown and pressed glass elements, the piece reflects Höglund’s signature aesthetic: materially grounded, expressive, and unapologetically tactile.
The structure consists of a circular iron frame with six evenly spaced arms extending outward, each terminating in a cylindrical candleholder fitted with a shallow drip plate. The radial symmetry of the ironwork offers a disciplined geometric base, while the varied surface patina—including minor oxidation and tool marks—emphasizes its hand-forged origin. Suspended from the arms and central hub are a series of irregularly shaped glass discs and bubbles, cast in clear and lightly tinted glass. These pieces are pressed with abstract patterns and organic voids, casting gentle distortions and shadows when illuminated by candlelight.
The vertical axis of the candelabra is visually anchored by large, blown glass elements in warm amber and deep rust hues. These bulbous glass forms evoke traditional vessel shapes while serving as sculptural counterpoints to the horizontal arms. Their translucency and warm tone contrast with the opaque blackness of the iron, creating a dialogue between lightness and mass, transparency and density.
Erik Höglund (1932–1998) was a trailblazer in Swedish postwar design, particularly known for his work at Boda Glasbruk. Rejecting the refined minimalism typical of earlier Scandinavian glass design, Höglund embraced raw surfaces, folk motifs, and expressive irregularity. His frequent collaboration with regional blacksmiths resulted in a body of work that merged utility and artistry, combining elemental materials—glass and iron—in architectonic and ceremonial forms. This hanging candelabra is a key example of that approach, capturing his ability to transform everyday functions into sculptural environments.
The piece remains in very good vintage condition. The iron has developed a natural, even patina, with minor surface oxidation consistent with age and intended aesthetic. All original glass components are present and intact, with no chips or cracks. The structure is sound, and the piece includes its original hanging hardware.
The candelabra measures 47 cm in diameter and 57 cm in height (approximately 18.5 × 22.4 inches). It is a striking and atmospheric object that reflects the intersection of mid-century Scandinavian design, vernacular craft, and sculptural experimentation.
