Hans-Agne Jakobsson candlesticks
This rare pair of model L-95, known as “Rasmus” candlesticks was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. These candlesticks represent a quintessential example of Scandinavian modern lighting design, where simplicity, material quality, and the creation of atmospheric illumination are key elements.
Each candlestick features a cylindrical base made of brass, perforated with decorative patterns that allow light to softly diffuse through the metal. The upper section is composed of hand-blown glass diffusers in two different tones: one in warm amber and the other in a muted smoke grey. The contrast between the warm metallic base and the translucent glass shades exemplifies Jakobsson’s signature style, which emphasizes the interplay between materials and the quality of light they emit. The forms are minimal yet thoughtfully designed to produce a gentle, ambient glow.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a leading figure in mid-20th-century Swedish lighting design. His work is noted for innovative use of brass and colored glass, as well as for shaping light to create inviting, comfortable environments. His designs often balance functionality with subtle sculptural qualities, and this pair of candlesticks clearly reflects those principles.
The candlesticks exhibit a natural patina on the brass consistent with their age. Both bases are marked with the original Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB label, ensuring authenticity and provenance. Their dimensions measure 11 cm in diameter and 18.5 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 4.3 by 7.3 inches.
