Aksel Bender Madsen & Ejner Larsen sofa
This rare bench or sofa was designed by the Danish design duo Ejnar Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen and produced by Næstved Møbler in Denmark in 1957. Larsen and Bender Madsen, both trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, were known for their functional and refined approach to furniture design, often emphasizing simplicity, comfort, and craftsmanship. Their collaboration with some of Denmark’s most skilled cabinetmakers resulted in a series of pieces that today are regarded as exemplary works of Scandinavian modernism.
The bench is constructed in solid teak, a material chosen both for its durability and for the warm depth of its natural grain, which is visible along the frame and legs. The newly reupholstered seat and backrest are covered in a soft grey fabric, a contemporary update that harmonizes with the original wooden frame. The design itself is linear and restrained, with a slightly angled backrest providing comfort while maintaining a light and minimal silhouette. The legs are slender yet stable, joined by subtle structural elements that emphasize precision woodworking.
The piece is characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian furniture, where the focus was on functional elegance, clarity of form, and the use of high-quality materials. Its proportions and understated details allow it to serve equally well in private and public interiors, reflecting the democratic ideals of design that were central to the Danish modern movement.
The sofa remains in good vintage condition, with only small signs of usage consistent with age. Its renewal through updated upholstery ensures usability while preserving the integrity of the original construction and design.
